Seriously tho I'm glad you wrote UL (& I'm sure I'm not the only one), it's a big help normally.

But as to abnormal.....
I wanted to ask if you have any ideas about what could be causing the "queue" file corruption & contents loss I am seeing. Anything I can look for?

-If I load single files paused from group control & then normally close & restart UL they will generally be lost.
-Grouped files will sometimes survive.
-nzbs will sometimes survive, but if I load 10 random nzbs, restart & then reload them again & restart UL there is no guarantee that any will remain after the restart or even that the same files will disappear/remain over several normal restarts.
-if UL locks up (which is happening recently) then pretty much everything can be lost - really annoying when I've hunted down odd files manually in the headers. Crying or Very sad

This kind of thing never happened to me before, UL always managed to save its' queue. (Even back in the early builds)
It's really weird....wracking my brain to think what has been installed other than |MS| patches & I don't seem to have any malware etc.
My partial solution is to delete the queue file between restarts of the PC, but obviously this isn't always the best option...

Can I survive until the new build or is it format time??? Rolling Eyes Razz

You can survive Cool

I'm not so sure....!
Very Happy

Zorro would you like me to send you a copy of the queue file? Would you be able to detect where/why the error is starting?

I loaded a group of nzbs & then shutdown/restarted UL. Download panel now shows empty. Queue file = 5.04 mb.
Viewing queue in hex editor shows entries are present...

Same nzbs reloaded (existing queue file not deleted first). Queue = 9.82mb
2nd & 3rd shutdown/restart - nzbs remain in list.

I am now also seeing multiple entries in the Log/history panel, sometime just a few - 3-10, sometimes several hundred identical entries are made. Can be a single small file or a file-set. Item is only leeched once.

Seen whilst updating headers today..

Still having a regular problem with UL not saving queue so I have to keep track of every file now. Items added to queue from group control disappearing etc. GUI lock-ups & hi-lite freezes as with old betas. Garbaging doesn't always seem to work. I set the time frame & UL reports it is garbaging but the cache keeps growing in size.

This has only been a recent thing (last few months) & hasn't improved lately at all.

Wondering if this could be a faulty RAM chip or something. I have run memtest & had no errors, but this is really irritating & seemingly unsolvable.
Ran hardware tests & temps are fine etc, done a few full clean installs with registry being cleaned - nothing works... Confused Crying or Very sad

Help!

Maybe its smthg with the copy protection under certain circumstances, but impossible to reproduce here. How often this happens ?

Since about May, pretty much every day....

If I start UL & load nzbs etc then shut it down normally 70%+ of the time it will lose the queue.
Add the crashes & the GUI misbehaviour & it's no longer a happy prog Sad Sad

Weird as it's been great for months before that...... Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

Tried - re-install, & different version - last final or last beta
reg-cleaning.
hardware stress tests.
& I'm as sure as I can be I'm virus free....

Have been thinking about the problem & as you mentioned the protection system I suddenly wondered if Skype could interfere somehow. I'm thinking maybe it did an update when UL started crashing...
As it is, it starts with Win even if the 'Start with Win' option is deactivated, so it isn't behaving anyway! Confused Rolling Eyes

Obviously I don't know why that would prevent UL from saving its queue - which it always did right from the first beta I tried - but maybe you can investigate this possibility Zorro.........??

Todays crash, seems like I just can't walk away from the PC or it CTDs locks-up or something.

Don't understand how its doing it, all these months of doing what it should & now it will crash if I tell it to update headers & leech simultaneously.

Maybe I need to buy a new rig as UL just doesn't like this one Crying or Very sad Shocked

Decided to nuke the HD. UL was the only thing that appeared to be having trouble but I thought 'Why not? Windows likes to be formatted!'

Base OS install, full MS update.

Then I installed UL

The GUI isn't perfectly reactive but is hugely improved & UL hasn't crashed since I loaded it. (near 2 hours)
Decided to use 186.xx version nvda drivers as I suspect later ones affect the GUI - which seems almost 90% working now. (Still likes to be sent to tray then maximised to show status & hi-liteing correctly) [Don't know what will happen to my games tho!!]
One weird thing I have never seen before, adding from the group control list shows files are queued etc but many aren't listed/visible in the download queue. (Both single files & grouped files are missing)
Will have to see if they actually leech or have been swallowed en route to the leech queue somehow.

Upd8 - "Missing" items appeared in queue once it went under 30 entries. No way of scrolling down & no whitespace over 30 lines? It will scroll on the 30 lines however. Strange stuff. I must have a Frankenstein build!!

Upd8 #2
Queue all leeched/completed successfully. No CTDs etc. I left 2 items paused in the queue & tried to select them, suddenly I had endless white space & a scroll that went on forever. Shut down/restarted UL - normally completed - on restart empty queue...

I therefore can only assume that something MS updated this year has created this issue - .Net perhaps? I do have AV & FW active but that is all & UL has all possible permissions.

Stay tuned for tomorrows thrilling episode...
Shocked

Seems that whatever MS patched in 7 earlier this year (that made me ditch it) has crept into Vista. Affects on UL aren't as bad is in 7 but still not good compared to how perfectly UL behaved last year.

Can only assume that this is also connected to my hardware config.
Maybe there will be a driver that can fix it.
Hasn't happened yet tho!

At least the HDD being wiped has focused my suspicions... Rolling Eyes Shocked

A driver update for my mobo was released on 27 July, just grabbed it & it installed a new set of C++ 2008 redist files. UL now seems to be saving the queue on close most of the time.

Could be something to investigate Zorro.... Wink

Had a side by side configuration error come up from a new app. This req'd the install of C++ 2008 9.0.21022.8 redist. (Despite having already installed C++ 2008 with the above driver.)

Now I am losing the queue more often, having all the old GUI faults - lock-ups, sticking hi-lites, no update to GUI as leeching occurs etc & the crash shown above.

That has to be the best evidence for a cause I have found yet.
Weird that I should have the side by side error at all & I can't get away from it w/out this C++ pack which appears to affect UL...

Ideas Zorro?
